These stylized birds have very long and featherless legs, which enables them to enter salt or alkaline waters without getting their plumage dirty.
Its long neck and downward curved bill are, together with their pink colour, their identifying marks. Their colour is due to the algae and shrimp they feed on thanks to their bill being full of minute lamellae which enable them to filter the water and take from it only the particles they need.
They feed by moving their head from side to side across the surface of the water and by opening and closing the mouth slightly, which creates a current of water through the mouth, enabling them to filter the water. American flamingos are one of the most social birds in the world.
They even undertake courtship en masse, with their necks extended and walking from one side to another swivelling their heads in synchronised movements.
