The most refreshing encounter at Selwo Marina!

During this educational encounter, you’ll enter the Sea Lion Bay, surrounded by cliffs and viewing points, and get closer than ever to the California sea lions (Zalophus californianus). Accompanied at all times by their keepers, you’ll discover everything about this species, how they thrive in their marine environment, and what we do to care for and conserve them. And not only that, but you’ll also learn some of the signals used to communicate with them!

During the activity, our team will take photos which you can purchase at the Photo Stand before leaving Selwo Marina. What’s more, you can choose from a range of personalised gifts to find the ones you like best!

What is the Sea Lion Encounter like?

Once you’re in your swimsuit, we’ll introduce you to our animals and you’ll discover the anatomy of these pinnipeds, which is perfectly adapted to the sea. In their habitat, which contains over 330,000 litres of salt water, you’ll be amazed by their agility – sea lions are excellent swimmers!

Next, they’ll come over, greet you and cool you off with a splash! You’ll discover the bond they share with their carers, which is key to the medical training that ensures their wellbeing—always carried out voluntarily and using positive reinforcement. This allows us to check their health and give them the best care!

But there are more surprises! You’ll be able to see them underwater wearing diving goggles and, what’s more, you’ll also be able to interact with the sea lions so they respond to your signals... it’ll be like becoming a marine mammal trainer for a moment!

Activity guidelines

Children aged 4 and over may take part. All children aged between 4 and 6 must be accompanied by an adult (aged 18 or over) who books and pays for their place. Children aged 7 and over may take part unaccompanied by an adult.
We recommend bringing a swimsuit, which you can wear directly for the activity or use with the wetsuit we will provide.
For safety reasons, participating in this educational interaction is not recommended during pregnancy.

When booking this interaction online, you will select the date and time at the time of purchase. Please remember that on the day of your booking, you must report to the Visitor Centre at least half an hour before the activity begins.
