Privet is the common name for the botanical species belonging to the genus Ligustrum, which comprises about 40-50 accepted species of evergreen, semi-evergreen or deciduous shrubs and small trees. They belong to the olive family, the Oleaceae.

The Ligustrum is native to Europe, North Africa, Asia, Australasia, with centres of diversity in China, the Himalayas, Japan and Taiwan.

Some species of this genus pose a major problem in New Zealand, as it has been shown to trigger asthma attacks and eczema in sensitive individuals.
