The date palm is a fruit-bearing palm tree that produces dates. This species is one of the most remarkable in the genus Phoenix, which includes fifteen others, probably native to Southwest Asia.

DISTRIBUTION: From the Canary Islands, through North Africa and South Asia, to the Far East.

INTERESTING FACT: Dates contain a lot of tannin which is used medicinally as a detergent (for cleaning) and intestinal astringent, another use is as a detoxifier for alcoholics.
