The date palm is a fruiting palm tree which produces dates. This species is one of the most prominent of the Phoenix genus, which contains another fifteen varieties, and probably originates from south-east Asia.
DISTRIBUTION: found in the Canary Islands and throughout north Africa, southern Asia and the Far East.
INTERESTING FACT: dates contain high levels of tannin which is used medicinally for detoxification, due to its cleansing and astringent effect on the colon. It is also used as a detoxification treatment for alcoholism.
