A deciduous shrub or small tree which grows to heights of six to eight meters, the branches are long, flexible and hard to break. The bark is dark reddish-grey and in younger trees is shiny and smooth.
DISTRIBUTION: Preferring dry, hot climates, the Tamarind is found all over the west Mediterranean including the south of France and Spain, reaching as far north as England. Also found in the southern Sahara.
INTERESTING FACT: the bendy, fibrous branches are used for making rope.
