The “Beethoven” sea lion educational exhibition will allow you to marvel at the abilities of this species both in and out of the water, thanks to the impressive male Californian sea lion (Zalophus californianus) that Selwo Marina hosts at its facilities as part of the European Endangered Species Programme (EEP).
Adapted to life at sea, the Californian sea lion can see almost as well underwater as it can on land, with vision in the blue and green spectrum and a reflective layer, similar to that of felines, that reflects light passing through its retina to improve its vision in low light. It swims at a speed of about 10 km/h and dives for up to three minutes at a time. Its keen eyesight is complemented by a keen sense of hearing, superior to that of humans, and it has 38 vibrissae, or whiskers, on each side of its face that are equipped with nerves that detect vibrations and provide sensory information about its surroundings.
