The Panaque has an elongated body that is also flattened at the ventral end, widest in its anterior section and gradually tapering to the caudal peduncle. Its eyes are located on the sides and it has a sucking mouth set at an angle.

If the Panaque is in good condition, filamentary extensions will be visible on both rigid sides of the caudal fin.
