Eastern milksnake is distributed from the eastern United States, Mexico and Central America to northwest South America.
False coral differs from the poisonous species in the order of the colored rings. While the coral has a white ring alternating between each colour: red, white, black, white, red... in the false coral the white is only found between two black rings: red, black, white, black, red... Moreover, the white colour in the coral is more yellowish than in the fake coral. There is no sexual dimorphism.
It is mainly a nocturnal and solitary species that is only found in groups during hibernation. It is not a poisonous species, it kills by constriction and defends itself by biting and discharging a foul-smelling fluid from the sewer. During the day it usually stays under stones, among the forest leaves or inside holes. Females build their nests in burrows, under rocks, in tree holes or in a decomposing plant layer. The clutch consists of 2 to 17 eggs with a gestation period of 28 to 39 days.
